Rustic Woodwork Reimagined: The Story of Southwest Spiral Designs
Formerly known as Lujan’s Custom Carving, my journey in woodworking began during my tenure with Southwest Spanish Craftsmen years ago. It was during this time that I realized woodworking would shape my future. Crafting many pieces of furniture from latillas and leather became a passion project for me at home, despite having limited tools and financial resources.
In 2000, I transitioned to Southwest Spiral Designs, marking a significant milestone in my career. Later, in 2006, I ventured to establish Lujan’s Custom Carving, diligently building its reputation over the years. However, in 2014, the business underwent a name change from Lujan’s Custom Carving to Southwest Spiral Designs. The previous owners had shuttered the business, and I got permission to carry on the name, thus assuming ownership of Southwest Spiral Designs.

Materials
The wood
Our preferred material is locally-sourced semi-green Douglas fir from the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range, unless specified otherwise.
the work
Hand-carved from this material, our creations exhibit a unique, antique, and rustic architectural charm.
Natural Checking
It's important to note that local Douglas Fir naturally tends to crack, shrink, and twist, particularly evident in square columns. Cracks may be up to 1/4" on 6x6 and 8x8 products, which is considered normal.
Natural Charm
Most customers find this characteristic charming and position the cracks on less noticeable sides.
